Diagnosis and the Body

This course will focus on learning to attend to ourselves and our client’s somatic processes through kinesthetic awareness, and using this as orientation and guidance in developing a diagnosis of relational field. We will address the historical evolution of somatic awareness in treatment and focus on practical application of somatic awareness in our Gestalt tradition, including the concepts of kinesthesia, kinesthetic resonance, and diagnosing by the aesthetic criteria.   The course will consist of 15 hours of lecture and experiential work plus a short reflection paper for people in the PA program taking this course as part of their ongoing training.

Existential Issues

This course will examine transference/countertransference/resistance in its historical context as it emerged from an intrapsychic individualist model and developed into a model focusing on the emerging structure of the situation. We will analyze the influence of phenomenology, gestalt psychology, and existentialism, as they relate to the innovations of Gestalt therapy. Clinical material will be presented to exemplify contemporary Gestalt therapy’s use of transference/counter-transference as a functioning of the contact-boundary in a psychotherapeutic meeting. This course requires participants to complete Level I of GAP training before registering.
